Gerd Ludwig/ASA / ASA, On April 26, 1986 at 1:23 am, the Chernobyl Nuclear Power PlantÕs Reactor #4 blew up after operators botched a safety test, triggering the worldÕs worst nuclear disaster to date. Twenty years later, the long shadow of Chernobyl continues to darken lives - socially, environmentally, and physically. On the days and months following the accident, strong winds pushed the radiation released by the explosion northwesterly into the Gomel region of Belarus, contaminating thousands of square kilometers with the fallout. Nineteen years later, girls born around the time of the Chernobyl accident are having children of their own, and many of them undergo psychological stress wondering what the contamination may have done to their reproductive organs. At the Maternity House, a hospital in Gomel, women in labor often share the same delivery room.
